In what seems like a substitute for the Macbook, the U405D-S2874, is user friendly and easy to carry with its 13.3 inch screen. Equipped with 2.1GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core RM-72, 4 GB RAM and 320 GB hard drive, it suffers from the common problems that come with an AMD processor.

The laptop has what Toshiba calls its ‘Horizon’ pattern or ‘Fusion’ finish and it is a good look for all kinds of settings- home or work. The touchpad is in contrast to the glossy keyboard and adds to the charm with its matte touch and functionality. Another plus point is that the laptop can charge USB devices even if it is switched off, but still connected to a power outlet.

It weighs a light 5.9 pounds along with the AC adapter and just 5 pounds without it. There is an ExpressCard slot, mini Fire-Wire and Wifi, but sadly no Bluetooth. There is however, provision to plug hardware through the ports. The glossy screen though seems like a distraction, is actually not because there is no glare.

Competing with similar laptops, the U405D-S2874 falls short because it has a very short battery life even though it had extendable battery support. Also, there are some performance issues when compared to other laptops which make you feel like you did not get your money’s worth.
